Abstract
The purpose of this document is to provide a comprehensive collection of the most popular and difficult saxophone excerpts from the wind band literature. Excerpt playing is an important part of every musician’s training and is vital part to obtaining jobs. Military bands are one of the largest employers of saxophonist and their audition process focuses heavily on excerpt playing. To date there is no resource for saxophonist to prepare for these auditions. This project seeks to fill this void by providing seventy-two excerpts from the wind band repertoire. As a result, this dissertation will provide a supplement to the traditional saxophone curriculum. Moreover, playing excerpts helps promote both the work and genre from which the excerpt comes, familiarizes the performer with the standards of the repertoire, teaches important yet under-performed works, and develops positive practice habits This dissertation focuses on select saxophone excerpts from the wind band literature between 1910 and 2015. The compositions included were carefully chosen based on their artistic merit and significance within wind band auditions. In addition to these excerpts, instructional insight and recording information will be provided to better serve the performer.
