Abstract
A reference librarian in a law library is often faced with questions from members of the public inquiring about basic legal issues, from how to obtain a protection order to what the statute of limitations is for a personal injury claim. She is also confronted with the issue of whether the answer to the query constitutes proper reference service or the unauthorized practice of law. Do librarians who give out or guide patrons to legal information break the law by engaging in the unauthorized practice of law? This article analyzes that question.
