Abstract
News coverage of the American Indian gaming issue is essential in telling the story of how a tribe obtains money and how it spends it. When news personnel report these stories in the media, are those messages misinterpreted? Do these stories negatively portray American Indians and therefore mislead the reader? A content analysis of mainstream newspapers from 1990 to 2008 was conducted for specific key words and sentences to indicate frames or stereotypes in news stories about American Indian gaming. The time for the analysis is 1990, shortly after the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act was passed in 1988 to allow for gaming on tribal lands.
