Abstract
The purpose of this study is to discover the nature and extent or Benjamin Franklin's reputation among the literati from 1790, the year of his death, to 1860, the close of a significant period in the development of the American nation. It attempts to show first what the literati or, more generally, the intelligent thinking men of that period thought of Franklin's personal character., his public services., his qualities of mind., and especially his writings.
