Abstract
This paper analyzes Robert Schumann's piano suite Kreisleriana, Op. 16, and explores its compositional characteristics under the influence of both literature and music, especially the profound influence of E.T.A. Hoffmann's novel “The Life and Opinions of the Tomcat Murr: Together with a Fragmentary Biography of Kapellmeister Johannes Kreisler on Random Sheets of Waste Paper.” The study takes the unique “double novel structure” from Hoffmann's novel as a starting point and analyzes how Schumann transformed the contrast and unity in literature into the formal language of musical composition. Schumann utilizes stylistic opposites, genre mixing, and polyphonic weaving in his work to construct psychological tension and artistic fantasies that echo Hoffmann's novel, ultimately making the piece a musical autobiography that blends fantasy, struggle, and love.
