Abstract
The Council for Social Work Education (CSWE) provides oversight of social work programs and requires practicum supervisors to have two years of post-Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) or Master of Social Work (MSW) experience to provide supervision to social work students during their field education. However, there is currently no specified supervision model required for supervising social work students. This capstone provides a literature review regarding needs of social work students, child welfare agency/practicum supervisors, and the social work program’s pedagogical discipline practices. This review along with current modalities informed the creation of a field practicum guide to provide evidence-based supervision practices. The guide follows the framework of Kolb’s Experiential Learning Theory (KELT), signature pedagogy, and Integrative Developmental Model (IDM) of supervision, guiding evidence-informed best practices for effective supervision in child welfare practicum placements. The guide includes an introduction, student content and tools, supervision modalities, approaches and components, supervision topics, surveys, and resources for both students and practicum supervisors. The impact of this guide fills a void in current practices in field education.
