Abstract
In this dissertation, via in-depth interviews with Gen X Facebook users, I explore how Facebook Wall posts and memorial pages have emerged as a ritualized, public thanatechnological space for maintaining continued bonds and how Gen Xers view others’ and their own online interactions (or lack thereof) with the deceased and those who are grieving. I also explore their feelings about other death-centric but not necessarily continuing bonds related posts that I refer to as Mourning 2.0. This research also highlights reasons why these Facebook users either embrace or reject online public performances in social media spheres related to death, mourning, and bereavement. The current research also demonstrates how data found on public websites, such as Facebook, and user experiences with them can be used to further understand social norms related to death, mourning, and bereavement and to explore continuing bonds between the living and the dead.
