Abstract
Theatre for Young Audiences relies on conceptual metaphors to reflect conflicts and resolutions in young lives. I offer some examples from my reception studies to show how children interpret verbal, visual, kinesthetic, and conceptual or thematic metaphors contained in expressionistic, surrealistic, and absurdist plays in performance. This evidence suggests just how far theatre artists may stretch children’s metaphoric capabilities despite their preferences for realism.
