Abstract
The purpose of the study was two-fold: to determine a system of comparable scores for the tests of the elementary and intermediate batteries and for the intermediate and advanced batteries or the California Achievement Tests, and to investigate the differences between test scores obtained by Indian pupils in 1951 and 1952. The batteries are comprised of the following tests: reading vocabulary and comprehension; arithmetic (mathematics at the advanced level) fundamentals and reasoning; language (grammar and mechanics) and spelling. In addition, total scores are obtained for each of the batteries.
The samples used in the equating procedures were composed of 334 sixth and seventh grade Indian pupils and 231 tenth grade Indian pupils enrolled in schools in the Phoenix area and in the state of Oklahoma. These pupils were enrolled in nine Federal schools and one mission school.
The estimated true standard score method was first used to obtain equivalent scores for the various tests. Where the scores developed by this method failed to meet the two specified a prior criteria for equivalence, the method of equal proportions was next used. Equivalent scores which met the criteria wore obtained for all tests of the elementary and intermediate batteries and or the intermediate and advanced batteries by using one of the above procedures.
The results of the study permit teachers, administrators and other interested personnel to compare the results obtained on different levels of the tests. In addition, information is now available which permits a more comprehensive interpretation than has heretofore been possible of differences between T-scores obtained by pupils of the California Achievement Tests.
