Abstract
This study is a realist synthesis review, a unique type of systematic review. In this study I investigate the role of music interventions and experiences in music therapy to promote self-concept and identity formation and validation. I analyzed six articles for their contexts, mechanisms, and outcomes. I then built an initial rough program theory (IRPT) regarding music programming for adolescents in various contexts. In the future, I would like to expand my research to include broader contexts and/or outcomes and to develop program theory to inform future clinical practice and education.
