    Needs, challenges and good practices in language teaching of immigrants

    Zaradi vse večje mobilnosti in migracij iz držav članic in nečlanic Evropske unije (EU) postajajo družbe in izobraževalni sistemi EU vse bolj večkulturni in večjezični. Izobraževalne ustanove se srečujejo z dvema izzivoma: otrokom priseljencem čim prej omogočiti, da kar najhitreje usvojijo jezik izobraževanja, in jim hkrati pomagati ohraniti materni jezik. To je bil povod za začetek mednarodnega projekta Erasmus + DEAL Razvoj pismenosti in učenje jezika za mlajše učence v jezikovno manj ugodnih okoliščinah (2018–2020) s sodelujočimi institucijami iz Hrvaške, Severne Makedonije in Slovenije. V prispevku bodo predstavljeni primeri dobre prakse, prenosljive v različne jezike. EU societies and educational systems are becoming increasingly multicultural and multilingual due to the increased mobility and migration from EU and non-EU countries. Educational institutions are facing two challenges: to provide newcomer students with the possibility to acquire the language of education as soon as possible, and to help them to maintain their native language. This was the trigger to start the international Erasmus + DEAL Project Development of Literacy and Language Learning for Disadvantaged Young Learners (2018–2020) with institutions from Croatia, Northern Macedonia and Slovenia. The paper will present examples of good practice transferable to different languages.

    Mistakes on the acquisition of functional literacy in the e-environment and new tasks of Slovenian language didactics

    Razmišljanja o kurikulih za materinščino v šoli za 21. stoletje v zadnjem desetletju pogosto izhajajo iz nekaterih zmot o generaciji Z. Digitalni domorodci, kot jih imenujejo, naj ne bi več potrebovali zmožnosti linearnega branja, tipkovnica naj bi popolnoma nadomestila pisalo in, kar je najbolj nevarno, otroci naj bi dandanes razvili zmožnost funkcionalne pismenosti v e-okolju samodejno, zato jih tega v šoli ni treba učiti. Relevantna teoretična spoznanja in empirične raziskave pa kažejo, da so vsa tri prepričanja zmotna in da ne bi smela vplivati na oblikovanje novih kurikulov za materinščino. Over the past decade, reflections on mother tongue curricula in 21st century schools have often stemmed from certain misconceptions about Generation Z. Digital natives, as members of Gen Z are often called, supposedly do not need linear reading skills anymore; the keyboard is supposedly replacing the pen entirely, and, most dangerously, the children of today are supposed to develop their functional literacy in e-environments automatically, which is why they do not require to be taught this at school. Relevant theoretical findings and empirical research, however, show that all these three beliefs are erroneous and that they should not influence the design of new mother tongue curricula.

    Youth works by four literary creators, members of the Maribor Five

    V članku so predstavljena literarna dela štirih avtorjev mariborske peterice, Franceta Forstneriča, Marijana Krambergerja, Andreja Brvarja in Toneta Partljiča, ki sodijo v mladinsko književnost. Eden temeljnih elementov mladinskega ustvarjanja vseh štirih avtorjev je avtobiografskost, ki je v obravnavanih delih usmerjena na motive iz otroštva, glavni lik je otrok/pisatelj/pripovedovalec v času svojega otroštva, izjema so Partljičeva dela, ki sodijo med biografije in avanturistično prozo. Trije avtorji so bili za svoja mladinska dela tudi nagrajeni. The article looks at the works of children’s literature in the literary opus of four authors, members of the group known as the Maribor Five, France Forstnerič, Marijan Kramberger, Andrej Brvar and Tone Partljič. One of the basic features in the writing for young readers of all three authors is an autobiographic element, directing them to motifs from childhood. The main character is the child/author/narrator at a younger age, the exception being certain works by Partljič, which can be classified as biographical and adventure prose. Three authors have also received awards for their works for young readers.

    New Krajna and Breznik's century-old practice

    Začetki prve slovenske pratike, ki je izhajala periodično, segajo vsaj v leto 1725, ko je ljubljanski tiskar Janez Jurij Mayr založil in natisnil Novo krajnsko pratiko za leto 1726, prva ohranjena pa je iz leta 1741. Zahtevnejša, obsežnejša in vsebinsko bogatejša slovenska pratika na prelomu stoletij je bila Večna pratika od gospodarstva Antona Breznika, ki je prvič izšla leta 1789 (zatem še v več izdajah) in velja za prvo pravo gospodarsko pratiko v slovenskem jeziku. The beginnings of the first Slovene almanac published periodically dates back at least to 1725, when the Ljubljana printer Janez Jurij Mayr published and printed the Nova krajnska pratika for 1726, while the first preserved copy dates back to 1741. The more demanding, extensive and richer Slovene almanac at the turn of the century was Večna pratika gospodarstva by Anton Breznik, which was first published in 1789 (then in several editions) and is considered the first true economic almanac in the Slovene language.

    Ana Wambrechtsamer – writer and connector of two languages ​​and cultures

    Prispevek se ukvarja z dvojezično slovensko-avstrijsko pisateljico Ano Wambrechtsamer (1897‒1933) in jo umesti v medkulturni model slovenske literarne zgodovine. Ana Wambrechtsamer je odraščala v dvojezičnem južnoštajerskem okolju. Pisala je pesmi in romantično obarvano domačijsko ter zgodovinsko pripovedništvo v nemščini. Po izselitvi v Avstrijo se je poglabljala v zgodovino Celjskih grofov in vse bolj iskala slovenske korenine. Začela se je intenzivno učiti slovenščine, da bi lahko v tem jeziku tudi literarno ustvarjala. Prebirala je slovenske klasike, začela prevajati svoja dela v slovenščino in slovensko književnost v nemščino. The contribution discusses the Slovene-German bilingual writer Ana Wambrechtsamer (1897‒1933) and places her within the intercultural model of Slovene literary history. Ana Wambrechtsamer grew up in the bilingual South-Styrian milieu and wrote poems and romance coloured native and historical narratives in German. After moving to Austria, she thoroughly studied the history of the Counts of Cilli and increasingly sought her Slovenian roots. She intensively learnt Slovenian in order to be able to create literature in this language. She also read Slovenian classics, and started translating her works into Slovenian and Slovenian literature into German.

    Slovene literature in the Central European area and the position of the other

    Članek obravnava položaj slovenske književnosti v srednjeevropskem prostoru z vidika drugega in drugačnega. Slovenci smo v preteklosti živeli v delih držav, v katerih smo imeli podrejen in nepriznan nacionalni status, podobno kot nekateri drugi srednjeevropski narodi. Pisanje v slovenščini je pomenilo odločitev za »položaj drugega«, kar je pomenilo manjvrednega in intelektualno nezadostnega. Ko pa se je slovenska književnost vzpostavila, je status drugačnosti v slovenskem prostoru dobilo npr. nemško pisanje. V sodobnem času se uveljavlja spoznanje o tem, da moramo v literarni zgodovini upoštevati tudi dela vseh tistih, ki so na Slovenskem ustvarjali v drugih jezikih. V literarni kanon tako vključujemo tudi ustvarjalce in ustvarjalke s t. i. dvojnimi literarnimi in jezikovnimi identitetami. The article deals with the position of Slovenian literature in Central Europe in terms of its treatment of the Other and the Different. In the past, Slovenians lived in regions of other nation states and their status was subordinate and unacknowledged, which was also a situation experienced by other Central European peoples. In such a situation, writing in the Slovenian language meant a decision to occupy the “position of the other”, generally considered inferior and intellectually inadequate. When Slovenian literature became established, this status of difference was ascribed to German writing, for example. In contemporary times, there has been a conscious decision to recognise writers in Slovenian who write in other languages and incorporate their work in our literary history. The Slovenian literary canon must begin to include writers with so-called dual literary and linguistic identity.

    Selected elements of the non-linguistic context of artistic and semi-artistic texts

    V polumetnostnih, zlasti pa v umetnostnih besedilih je poleg aktualizacije Saussurjeve dihotomije označevalec – označenec prisotna tudi aktualizacija prvin nejezikovnega konteksta, npr. prvin fizičnega, družbenega in mentalnega sveta ter načinov njihovega ubesedenja. Med prvine mentalnega sveta notranjih udeležencev komunikacijskega dogodka oziroma osrednjih likov izbranih gradivnih odlomkov sodi znanje o komunikacijskih načelih in strateška zmožnost izbiranja med upoštevanjem in neupoštevanjem sodelovalnega in vljudnostnega načela. Opazovanje posameznikovega mentalnega sveta lahko poseže v njegovo zasebnost, in tudi zato so polumetnostna in umetnostna besedila primerno gradivo, ki ponazarja učinkovanje prvin nejezikovnega konteksta na oblikovanje smisla katerega koli besedilnega sporočila. Two types of revitalisation are present in semi-literary and especially in literary texts: in addition to Saussure’s dichotomy of signifier and signified, there exist the revitalisation of the elements of non-linguistic context, such as those of the physical, social and mental worlds and the manners of their textualisation. Knowledge of communicative principles and the strategic capability to choose between either the fulfilment or nonfulfillment of the cooperative and politeness principles are classified as elements of the mental world of the inner participants of the communicative event. Observation of the individual’s mental world can interfere with their privacy, which is also why semi-literary and literary texts are useful material that clearly shows how the elements of non-linguistic context affect the formation of meaning for any textual message.

    Professional feminatives in dictionary sources and job advertisements

    Prispevek izhaja iz klasifikacije ženskospolskih poimenovanj za poklice, povzete po Standardni klasifikaciji poklicev. Zastopanost tovrstnih izrazov smo preverili v različnih jezikovnih virih. Pričakovano je v novejših jezikovnih virih več poklicnih feminativov kot v starejših; zgolj ženskospolska poimenovanja za poklice so v manjšini, a je pri tem pojavnost moškospolskih oblik prav tako pogojena s časovno zaporednostjo izida/objave jezikovnega vira. Opažamo, da se, vsaj z jezikovnega vidika, stremi k ohranjanju enakopravnosti spolov na trgu delovne sile in ob delitvi dela. Uresničevanje le-tega v praksi smo preverjali v razpisih za delo, objavljenih na spletnih straneh Zavoda za zaposlovanje RS, v katerih prevladuje navajanje zgolj moškospolskega poimenovanja za poklic; enakovredna raba žensko- in moškospolskega poimenovanja ne dosega niti dveh odstotkov. The article brings an overview of feminatives used for professions that are set out in the Standard Classification of Professions. The occurrence of feminatives has been examined in various Slovenian language sources. As expected, more professional feminatives are present in contemporary language sources than in older ones. According to the research, usage of just feminine denominations for professions is in the minority, but the occurrence of masculine forms is also conditioned by the chronological order of the language source publication. Consequently, at least from a linguistic point of view, gender equality in the labour market and labour division is aimed at. The implementation of the issue was verified in job advertisements published on the website of the Employment Service of the Republic of Slovenia. However, the results show the indication of only a male gender designation for the profession predominates; the equivalent use of female and male names do not reach even two per cent.

    Comparative phrases with zoonymic components in the Prekmurian dialect and Macedonian

    Prispevek obravnava primerjalne frazeme, ki imajo kot eno od sestavin poimenovanje za žival. Slovenski narečni prekmurski frazemi so primerjani s frazemi v genetsko sorodnem (južnoslovanskem) makedonskem jeziku, pri čemer se opiramo na slovar primerjalnih frazemov (Hrvatsko-slavenski rječnik poredbenih frazema (2006); slovenski del Erika Kržišnik) in makedonski frazeološki slovar (Фразеолошки речник на македонскиот јазик, 2003; 2008; 2009) ter ugotavljamo podobnosti in razlike med njimi. Vzporejanje narečnih prekmurskih in makedonskih frazemov pokaže, na osnovi katerih mentalnih podob je nastal isti frazeološki pomen v obeh primerjanih jezikih in ali so bile iste (ustaljene, resnične, domnevne, pogosto tudi antropomorfno pripisane) lastnosti posamezne živali motivirajoče pri njihovem nastajanju. The article deals with comparative idioms, a component of which is the naming of animals. Slovenian Prekmurje dialect idioms are compared to idioms in the genetically related Macedonian language. Here we make use of the dictionary of comparative idioms (Hrvatsko-slavenski rječnik poredbenih frazema (2006); Slovenian part by Erika Kržišnik) and Macedonian Phraseology Dictionary (Фразеолошки речник на македонскиот јазик (2003; 2 008; 2 009)) a nd d etermine the similarities and differences between them. Contrasting Prekmurje dialect idioms and Macedonian ones shows which images generate the same idiomatic meaning in both compared languages and whether the same (established, real, alleged and frequently also anthropomorphically ascribed) characteristics of individual animals were motivational at the time of their creation.

    Dialect words from the semantic field orchard in Murko's spawning speech

    V prispevku se osredinjamo na drsteljsko narečno besedje iz pomenskega polja sadovnjak. Drsteljski, tj. Murkov rodni govor slovenska dialektologija uvršča v prleško narečje panonske narečne skupine. Zbrano narečno besedje, ki ga je mogoče razvrstiti v več ožjih tematskih skupin, je predstavljeno v obliki abecedno urejenih slovarskih sestavkov in prikazano v luči njegovih strukturnih, etimoloških in besedotvornih značilnosti. The present article addresses the dialect words from the semantic field of orchard. The Drstelja subdialect, the subdialect of Murko’s birthplace, is categorised by the Slovenian dialectologist as a Prlekija dialect of the Pannonian dialect group. The chosen vocabulary, which can be classified into several smaller thematic groups, is presented in the form of dictionary entries arranged in alphabetical order and presented in view of its structural, etymological and word formation characteristics.

    Presentation of handwritten sermons from Prekmurje from the first half of the 20th century

    V prispevku so predstavljene pred nekaj leti odkrite prekmurske rokopisne pridige, ki so bile najdene v Martjancih pri sorodnici pokojnega župnika Andreja Berdena. Gre za katoliške pridige, pisane za nedelje in praznike. Vseh skupaj je več kot petsto; pisali so jih različni avtorji. Nastajale so na prelomu iz 19. v 20. stoletje, okvirno do 30. let 20. stoletja, po različnih prekmurskih župnijah – največ jih je iz črenšovske in martjanske. Pridige dopolnjujejo zgodbo o razvoju prekmurskega jezika v Katoliški cerkvi, njihova najdba pa potrjuje, da si cerkvena književnost v Prekmurju zasluži nadaljnje raziskovanje. The article presents the handwritten sermons of Prekmurje, which were found a few years ago in the Parish of Martjanci at the relative of the deceased parish priest Andrej Berden. These are Catholic sermons written for Sundays and religious holidays. There are more than five hundred in all; they were written by different authors from the turn of the 20th century to approximately the 1930s in various parishes of Prekmurje – most of them from the Parish of Črenšovci and Parish of Martjanci. The sermons complement the story of the development of the Prekmurje language in the Catholic Church, and their finding confirms that the church literature in Prekmurje deserves further research.

    The image of the epidemic in older popular and journalistic texts

    Prispevek na podlagi izbranih poljudnostrokovnih knjig in časopisnih člankov osvetljuje poročanje o epidemiji kolere v 19. stoletju in na začetku 20. stoletja. Vire analizira na ravni vsebinskih elementov in na jezikovno-slogovni ravni ter ob tem opozarja na vzporednice med starejšimi in sodobnimi besedili, vezanimi na epidemijo. Osredinja se na ekspresivnost izražanja in rabo retoričnih sredstev, npr. personifikacije (bolezen nas obišče, se priklati, se ne misli posloviti …) ter metaforike (bolezen kot tujka, morilka, pošast). Na leksikalni ravni izpostavlja izraze, ki v epidemičnih okoliščinah izkazujejo večjo frekventnost pojavljanja že v 19. stoletju, npr. epidemija, higiena, karantena, osamiti, razkužiti. Gre za leksiko, ki učinkovito nakazuje tematska izhodišča analiziranih besedil in obenem predstavlja okvir tedanje družbene realnosti. The article is based on select popular science books and newspaper articles and focuses on the reporting of the cholera epidemic in the 19th century and early 20th century. The analyses are performed on the level of the key contextual elements and on the linguistic-stylistic level. It draws attention to the parallels between older and contemporary texts which describe the epidemic. The analyses focus on expressiveness and the use of rhetorical devices, e.g. personifications (the disease visits us, it comes, does not mean to say goodbye…) and metaphors (illness as a stranger, murderer, monster). At the lexical level, the analysis points out the terms which in the time of epidemic often occur as early as in 19th century, e.g. epidemic, hygiene, quarantine, isolate, disinfect. These lexemes effectively indicate crucial themes in the analysed texts and at the same time reflect the social reality of the time.
